Millennia ago the world was broken.
In the wake of cosmic cataclysm, a myriad of parallel realms and pocket plains sprang into existence, where life and ordered slowly decayed under the rampant onslaught of nature. The only piece of the old universe to remain unscathed was Shard, the One World, where civilization remained frozen in an endless state of perfection, and the ruling class of humanity has ascended to psionic demi-godhood.

The Barren is covered with desolate deserts and sprawling rock formations, where new silicon-based lifeforms have evolved. These creatures are tough to kill, but their corpses yield precious graft dust – sand-like substance that hardens armor, sharpens blades and even bonds metal with organic tissue.
